AT A GLANCE

Huw's View

Relais Santa Anastasia has a stunning position in amongst olive groves and vineyards in the hills behind Cefalù on the north coast of Sicily.

It is ideal for those looking to get away from it all and be immersed in the peace and tranquillity of the Sicilian countryside yet enjoy views to the Tyrrhenian Sea and on a clear day to the Aeolian islands.

Opened in 2002, the hotel has an olde worlde charm, and with its own church and organic winery, it is the perfect place to sample local Sicilian food and wine in a relaxed atmosphere.

Yet it is also well situated to be able to take advantage of hiking, fishing, wine tasting and visiting the pretty medieval town of Castelbuono and the beach resort of Cefalù.

This hotel would be ideal for a short break or as part of a tour. Car hire essential.

Accommodation

The ancient Benedictine abbey has been transformed with careful restoration to offer 29 guest rooms and suites decorated and furnished in a traditional Sicilian style.

There are Classic and Deluxe double rooms (some with the possibility of an extra bed, some interconnect), Junior Suites (1 double room and 1 single room) and Grand Suites (2 double rooms + 1 extra bed, 2 bathrooms with bath or shower).

All the rooms are named after a different grape and have  en suite bath or shower room, complimentary WiFi, satellite TV, radio, air conditioning, phone, hairdryer, minibar and safe.

The hotel has two restaurants with an atmosphere of history and charm, the larger La Corte dell’Abate and the smaller Passioni e Tentazioni. There is a buffet breakfast available with an array of local pastries, breads, juices, fruits and hot drinks and there is a daily à la carte dinner menu (extra cost) specialising in traditional Mediterranean dishes with locally sourced, fresh produce, accompanied by local wines from the neighbouring Abbazia Santa Anastasia.

Snacks and drinks are available all day at the pool (extra cost) and it's a perfect place to enjoy an aperitivo before dinner.

There is an attractive outdoor swimming pool with jacuzzi and spacious terrace with sunbeds (pool towels provided) and panoramic views across the countryside to the sea.

There is a 24 hour reception to welcome guests and offer hotel and local information and can arrange local hiking trails, horse riding, lake fishing, mountain biking and trips to the Aeolian Islands (all extra cost). In the hotel there are reading and music rooms with open fireplace and a truly unique feature of the Relais Santa Anastasia is the beautiful on-site church.

The nearby Winery ‘Abbazia Santa Anastasia’ is open to guests for a guided tour to learn about the organic and biodynamic production. Wine tasting available (extra cost).

Relais Santa Anastasia is situated in the heart of the Madonie mountains, surrounded 450 acres of ash, juniper, oak trees and 80 hectares of vineyard and 60 acres of olive groves.

Castelbuono (11km away) is a pretty hill town and a thriving cultural centre since the 15 th century. As its name suggests, Castelbuono boasts a 14 th century castle believed to be a blend of Arabic and Norman styles, housing a collection of paintings and religious artefacts which provide a fascinating insight into the history of the island. There are several points of historical interest and a maze of cobbled streets opening onto shady piazzas with street cafes.

The charming town of Cefalù (14km away) was once a Greek settlement originally built on La Rocca, a large rock that dominates over the town. It was subsequently built up around the base of the rock in the 12 th century, giving a distinctive Norman influence throughout the town.

Peppered with restaurants, bars, shops and points of historical interest, Cefalù is an ideal location for history enthusiasts or those simply wishing to immerse themselves in the Sicilian culture or relax on the beach. With its Norman buildings and cathedral, fishing port, colourful streets and alleyways that slope down towards the sea and long beach, Cefalù offers attractions for all.
