Huw's View

This is a beautiful family run agriturismo in rural southern Sicily.

The passionate owners/hosts have created a small, rustic-chic hideaway hotel from the original farm buildings, now offering guest rooms and suites suitable for both couples and families and a villa sleeping up to 6 that can be self catering or have use of the farmhouse facilities.

There is a lovely pool and wonderful views from the gardens. The farm produces fantastic olive oil and guests can visit the production or even help with the harvest (September - October). There are also cookery lessons available with Silvia, one of the farm hosts.

The farm is relatively close to the Valley of the Temples which are well worth visiting and the coast is only 4km away.

Mandranova is very remote and guests MUST check in before 7pm when the gates are locked.

Car  hire is essential.

Situated in courtyard style gardens with palms, Mediterranean plants and olive trees, the farmhouse is made up from old warehouses and stables which have been recreated into lovely rustic guest rooms and suites on the ground and the first floor, with typical Sicilian décor, stone floors and traditional furniture.  All rooms have a minibar with water included, pool towels and a kettle with tea and coffee facilities.

Casale  has three double guest rooms (25 m 2 ), all with en suite shower rooms, the Arancio Superior  (40 m 2 ) with a double bedroom, living room with two single sofa beds and bathroom.

Frantoio has a superior double room (40m2) with one or two extra beds on request, en suite shower rooms and the Frantoio Suite (80m2) consists of one superior large comfortable room with a double bed and single bed, living area with two single beds (on request), shower room and large terrace.

Casuzze has one double room (25 m 2 , extra bed on request), two twin rooms, all with en suite shower rooms and the Cerasuola Superior(40 m 2 )   with double room, living room (third bed on request) and shower room.

Casello is 30m from the main building, originally an old railway station. It has four double rooms (25 m 2 ), all have an en suite shower room and can have an extra bed (on request).

Accommodation at the farmhouse has air conditioning, daily room cleaning, change of linen and breakfast provided. Please note that only the Superior rooms and Suites have a television.

Please note: Guests must check in before 7pm.

Villa Robazza is 300m from the main farmhouse and originally an old winery. Surrounded by olive trees with a terrace and small pool (April-mid October), the villa is available by the week from Saturday to Saturday, with the option of self catering or having meals at the farmhouse (extra cost).

The villa will be cleaned with fresh linen at the beginning of the week. There are two double bedrooms, each with air conditioning and en suite shower room and a tower room with two single sofa beds. The kitchen has an electric cooker, small electric oven, fridge, kitchenware and there are beach towels provided.

Please note: guests must check in before 7pm.

The friendly hosts provide guests with a Sicilian breakfast typical of the region with local and homemade products including marmalades, jams and cakes which can be enjoyed outside in the summer or in the cosy breakfast room. In the evening the restaurant offers home cooking based on regional produce and wines from the cellar, well-equipped with an exciting selection of Sicilian wines.

The farm is just a few miles from the sea with an estate of olive trees, some of them over a hundred years old and guests are able to see how their olive oil is produced.

There is a picturesque outdoor swimming pool (open mid April-mid October) with a shady patio for relaxation in the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. In the winter months there is an indoor reading room with cosy log fire. Guests can walk in the estate and enjoy spectacular views from the carrubo. Cooking lessons are offered daily with Silvia (the owner) when guests can choose the menu and pick vegetables in the garden, make fresh pasta and chocolate cake.

For those guests interested in the methods of olive oil production, the hotel offers tours of their factory with explication of olive oil production and olive oil tasting (extra cost). The olive harvest takes place from the end of September until the middle of October and this is an ideal time to take part in the production of the extra-virgin olive oil.

Mandranova is in a rural location but is well situated to explore the local area and the hotel can organise excursions, mountain bikes or boat trips including lunch (all extra cost).

The farm is in the province of Agrigento 6km from the town of Palma di Montechiaro, founded in 1637 by the Tomasi di Lampedusa family. It has some sights to visit including the castello, Benedictine monastery, Ducal Palace, Palazzo degli Scolopi, ruins of the Baroque church of Santa Maria della Luce and Archaeological Park of Zubbia.

Mandranova is 27km west of the Valley of Temples, on the outskirts of Agrigento, arguably one of the most beautiful and historically interesting locations in Sicily, characterised by the remains of ten temples dating back to the 5th century BC and the Temple of Concordia being one of the best preserved temples of the Greek civilization today.

It became part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997 being one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture, one of the main attractions in Sicily as well as a national monument of Italy.

The nearest beach to Mandranova is Marina di Palma 9km away and San Leone 28km west is a lively summer resort on the Mediterranean Sea with a good choice of restaurants and a sandy beach.

Porto Emopedocle is 6km from Agrigento where ferries depart to the Pelagie Islands of Lampedusa, Linosa, and Lampione, and 7km to the west is a stunning beach at Scala dei Turchi below white cliffs with crystalline water. 100km to the east of Mandranova are the Baroque towns of Ragusa and further on Modica, part of Val di Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
