Rich in history, culture and architecture, Sicily is a wonderful backdrop and hub for filming. Many notable films and television series have been shot here with the warm Mediterranean climate and stunning historical locations, it’s easy to see why directors and filmmakers flock to Sicily. From big blockbusters to television shows and small independent films, the filmography list for Sicily stretches back decades.

what has been filmed in sicily?

Islands of Sicily

the god father (1972) - savoca, Forza d'Agrò

Perhaps the most well-known film shot in Sicily is ‘The Godfather’. The plot follows the infamous head of a mafia family Don Vito Corleone and the trials and tribulations that come with handing over his empire to his youngest son, Michael. The film is regarded as once of the greatest of all time and a timeless classic, with many still enjoying the film and sequels to this day.

where was 'the godfather' filmed?

The town of Savoca together with the town of Forza d'Agrò is a commune in the Province of Messina, located 170km from Palermo. This small town is tucked away in between the rocks high on the large hill overseeing the ruins of castle Pentefur. The old town hall and Archimandrite Palace still stand as remains due to a feud between the King of Sicily and direct management of the Archimandrite. In the story, Michael is forced to flee the United States and sent to Sicily where some family friends hide him until things calm down. The famous Bar Vitelli where Michael asks his father to marry Apollonia is a fantastic site and was originally a farmhouse transformed into a bar for filming. Today, there are many objects and props related to or used in the film that are on display.

There are several well-known churches in the film, such as the Church of San Michele from the year 1250, and the Church of San Nicolò, which is a spacious and deeply religious building. It has three wide aisles and an imposing position over the steep valley. This church was one of the famous sets used in the film and was featured in Michael’s romantic wedding scene to his bride Apollonia. Decorations include a modern fresco behind the altar and a silver statue of St Lucy.

Forza d'Agrò is a town in Messina and is on the lower peak of a small mountain, while the higher peak overlooks the town and the remains of a Norman castle. This town boasts an incredible historical centre and beautiful views overlooking the coast. In 1971 the director, Francis Ford Cappola, specifically chose this wonderful small town as the set of several scenes in the film, including after the wedding at the church as they walk through the winding streets of the village. The remains of the Norman castle, the Durazzesco Arch and the church of Triad are all worth a visit as you are exploring this wonderful and historic town.

An honourable mention must also go to the town of Motta Camastra also in Messina, as it was used for several scenes where Michael was walking alongside his bodyguards during his exile – and during his first view into Sicilian life.

Savoca, Sicily

indiana jones and the dial of destiny (2023) - Syracuse, Cefalù

Indiana Jones is a world-famous franchise and began development by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg in 1973. The film depicts the adventures of Dr. Henry Walton ‘Indiana Jones’ as he explores various mysteries around the globe. The success of the first film, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ in 1981 has spawned a franchise of films, with the latest being the 2023 hit. This film is set in 1969 and follows Jones and his estranged goddaughter, Helena, as they are trying to locate a powerful artifact, before Dr. Jürgen Voller, a Nazi-turned-NASA scientist, who plans to use it to alter the outcome of World War II.

where was 'indiana jones and the dial of destiny' filmed?

Sicily was set as the backdrop for a great number of scenes in the film. The Ear of Dionysius is a limestone cave carved out of the Temenites hill in Syracuse and was specifically noted in the screenplay to be used for the large cave where Indiana and Helena enter Archimedes’ Tomb. This is where the duo find the coveted second piece of the Dial. This cave was originally a water storage facility for Syracuse during the Greek Roman era where the tyrant Dionysius used as a prison and would secretly listen to what the prisoners said about him as the acoustics of the cave were chillingly perfect. The unique shape of the entrance to the cave, along with its history of the tyrant ‘Dionysius I of Syracuse’, gives it it’s iconic name.

Also used in the film is Tonnara del Secco, an abandoned tuna factory and farm on the coast. There is a thousand years of history throughout the ruins of the ancient buildings, and the location overlooks the shimmering sea. Shallow pools along the rocky coast make a fantastic swimming spot, with the majestic mountains making a wonderful backdrop for the abandoned Tonnara.

During the film, we see the ‘real’ siege of Syracuse by the Romans in the 3 ^rd century BC. The warring armies shoot down the plane that the duo are in, believing it to be a dragon. Maniace Castle is situated in Syracuse at the far point of Ortigia Island. Constructed by Emperor Frederick II from 1232 for 8 years, it has been restored multiple times over the centuries, without losing its original charm. It has had a long history of renovations, even enduring harsh weather conditions, and this can be seen throughout its architecture and rugged terrain.

Some locations borrowed other parts of Sicily, as not all scenes set in Syracuse were filmed there. Segesta and Cefalù were used when it came to shooting some of the historical centre of Syracuse. The archaeological park looks different from what is shown in the film, and the temple from Segesta is visible in some scenes. In Cefalù , filming locations included the marina, and the beach of Lungomare. The streets and buildings were modified for the 1960s era of the film, but if you were to head down to the promenade today, you would find everything in its original authentic Sicilian style.

The leopard (2025) - palermo, catania, syracuse & ortigia

Originally a film adapted in 1963 (also filmed in Sicily) from the famous novel written by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa in 1958. The story follows a theme about the vanishing world of aristocracy in Sicily. Many fans of the original film were anticipating this recent adaption of The Leopard being turned into a television mini-series from the original film format.

This television miniseries is set in Sicily during the turmoil of the Risogimento in 1860 (the unification of Italy). A 19 ^th century Sicilian aristocratic family gets caught up in the changing socio political times. The Prince of Salina, Don Fabrizio, reigns over his family and his possessions, convinced that the disorder is going to pass. He cannot grasp the idealism of young people like his nephew Tancredi who risks his life by joining the rebels, or the ambitions of men like Sedara, a vulgar man who panders to the power of the mafia criminal organisations and intends to use his beautiful daughter to get what he wants. However, Don Fabrizio’s own daughter Concetta, who shares his intelligence and foresight, may be subjected to the same fate to ensue the survival of the power and name of the lineage.

where was 'the leopard' filmed?

There were many stunning filming locations throughout the series. Episode 1 opens with the city of Palermo. The city’s capital has a lot to offer, with its rich history and culture going back thousands of years. The city has witnessed many civilisations come and go, each leaving their own individual mark. There are several historical points of interest including the cathedral, Palace of the Normans, Massimo theatre and Politeama theatre and Pretoria Square. Scenes were filmed in the magnificent Palermo Cathedral, as the main character Don Fabrizio arrives to visit his daughter.

Catania was used for the Palazzo Biscari’s ballroom for several scenes in Episode 2, including the setting for Palermo’s liberation ball. The ballroom is an 18 ^th century marvel, flourishing with its spectacular furnishings and delicate attention to detail in the marble and artwork that surrounds the room. Ortigia and Syracuse still contain the oldest buildings, and in the series the main square in Ortigia, Piazza Duomo, was used for filming scenes in the fictional country town ‘Donnafugata’ where the Salina family retreats from their main home in the capital. The Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco, a grand urban palace on the Piazza Duomo, is one of the most famous buildings in the city and was used for the exterior of the Salina palace in ‘Donnafugata’.

aquaman (2018) - erice

This 2018 blockbuster follows the half human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry take his rightful place as the King of Atlantis and prevent large-scale conflict from breaking out between the underwater kingdom and the surface world. Though a large majority of this film was set underwater, the scenes set on land are just as interesting and unique.

WHERE WAS 'AQUAMAN' FILMED?

One lengthy scene was filmed in Sicily, in the small hilltop town of Erice. As Aquaman and his partner, Mera, explore ruins to find an important mystical trident. They encounter ‘Black Manta’ who begins to fight Aquaman for the trident. In the film, the Sicilian costal is computer generated, however, it strikingly resembles the town of Erice. The typical Sicilian style buildings and even copies of buildings themselves are seen in this scene – albeit a slightly different place.

The town of Erice is situated in a unique area on a hilltop overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west of Sicily. Medieval streets and ancient stone buildings with winding narrow streets show off this town’s multifaceted history. There are two castles in Erice - Pepoli Castle built by the Arabs, and Venus Castle built by the Normans. The two are a stark contrast of each other and each equally worth a visit. Chiesa Madre, built in 1314, is a gothic church with gorgeous archaic architectural details. On a beautiful clear sky day, the Egadi Islands off the coast of Trapani are visible, providing wonderful panoramic views across the town, bay and beyond.

An honourable mention should go to the television series ‘The White Lotus’. It is a recent American comedy drama anthology television series that gets everybody talking. With its intense character drama and amazing sets, it’s easy to see why this show is popular. upcoming: the odyssey (set to release 2026)

This film is currently being shot in Sicily. The premise follows Odysseus, the legendary Greek King of Ithaca, on his treacherous journey to return home after the Trojan war. He encounters many creatures and people, such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, a witch goddess and has a reunion with his wife. We are very excited to see which stunning locations in Sicily are used for the film!

Exploring the city’s architecture, enjoying the world class food and wandering the narrow streets and shops will be too almost too easy – but what can you really expect from a visit to Sicily in July?

Whilst Sicily boasts an all-year-round warm climate, the best weather is the hot and dry spell from May to October. With a 6-month blissful summer, average temperatures in July hover around 29°C during the day, while the evenings cool down to a comfortable 22°C. Temperatures can peak around the mid-thirties and can drop to the mid-teens. Expect clear blue skies, warm breezes and very minimal rainfall, with only a small chance of light showers.

The sea temperature averages around 25-27°C, ideal for swimming, snorkelling, or dipping your toes in! Whilst the Sirocco (from the Sahara to the south) and mistral (from the northwest) winds can blow during the summer months, the island generally maintains a pleasant climate. If you prefer slightly cooler temperatures, explore the mountain regions to escape the summer heat. You will be spoiled by sunshine during your July visit, so make sure you take sunscreen with you!

The Sicilian food culture has been influenced by many other different cultures, which is what makes their food so unique. Greek, Arab, French and Spanish are some of the main players when it comes to inspirations and influences. When blended, Sicily and mainland Italy offer a unique culinary experience, from couscous dishes in the west of the island to street food stalls in Palermo with snacks that were brought to the city by the Arabs and the Greeks.

During the warmer months in Sicily, you will find a plethora of market stalls, stacked high with olives, aubergines, capers, and tomatoes all fresh and tasting of summer. Those ingredients combined along with some onions and celery create the traditional Sicilian dish ‘Caponata’. Towards the end of the year, freshly picked sweet figs are used for cakes and tarts as well as being a wonderful accompaniment to a creamy ricotta.

Daily market stalls and fresh local produce will be present every morning with cheeses, warm ricotta, baskets of olives, toasted nuts, dried fruit and capers. Fish also features heavily on menus, with a thriving fish industry given the location of the island. Other sea related dishes include sea urchins with pasta, mussels and clams with spaghetti, boiled octopus and sword fish with olives. The sea is plentiful in providing delicious delicacies for the island.

A sweet treat is always the best way to finish a spectacular meal. Those with a sweet tooth won’t be disappointed! Locally grown ingredients such as almonds, pistachios and lemons are often the key factors in a traditional Sicilian dessert. Cannoli are pastries consisting of a tube-shaped shell of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet creamy filling containing ricotta cheese. And of course we can’t forget the gelato - artisanal gelato in Italy typically contains 6 to 9% butterfat, which is lower than other styles of frozen dessert, along with a slower churn and containing no eggs makes gelato softer, smoother and intensely flavourful.

Sicily remains unspoilt and authentic despite its popularity among tourists. The Sicilians have carefully protected and preserved the buildings and architecture to this day. Sicily offers the unique Mediterranean lifestyle unlike any other island. Whilst it is still very much a part of Italy, Sicily and its inhabitants uphold the island’s cultural autonomy with pride. The buzz and friendliness of the locals shines through in the service, hospitality and passion for their historic island. A unique infusion of cultures not only impacts greatly upon the island’s archaeology, but also its cuisine, dialect and traditions, making Sicily a wonderful and charming holiday destination.

July is the time of year where you can experience many festivals and events in Sicily. Festa di Santa Rosalia is held between the 10 ^th -15 ^th July and celebrates the patron saint Santa Rosalia. Tradition says after being led into a cave by two angels away from her noble family, Rosalina appeared to a sick woman and a hunter and ordered them to carry her bones through Palermo in a procession. After her bones had been caried around the city three times, the spreading of the plague had stopped. The festival is now a part of Sicily’s heritage, celebrating Rosaline every July.

Kal’s Art Festival is from July to mid-September, which showcases music, cinema, theatre and art in the capital of Palermo, with a particular focus on young European artists. Street performances, shows, exhibitions and art installations can be found dotted around several parks and piazzas which visitors to the city are highly encouraged to experience. Alkantara Fest works to bring in live acts, music workshops, art exhibitions and food, wine and beer for Mount Etna’s three-week music festival down by Alcantara river. Taormina Arte is staged at Teatro Greco between June and September and showcases a variety of performances from live music to opera, theatre and dance. The theatre alone is worth a visit, having been built in 3BC, the ancient ruins come back to life during this festival.

How historic is sicily?

For those interested in history, there is plenty to see in Sicily. All around you from the streets you walk on, to the buildings you pass, to the towns and villages you stroll through, Sicily offers a rich history with many civilizations throughout the decades leaving their own mark on the land. Both the Greeks to the Romans have influenced this interesting and unique island. Sicily has had its fair share of battles including the ‘Siege of Sicily’ beginning in 212 BC when the Romans successfully stormed the city of Syracuse, giving them control of the entire island.

The most prominent influences that can still be seen today are from the Greeks and the Romans. 215 to 750 BC, Greeks arrived in search of land to develop. Sicily proved to be extremely fertile with olives and vines being introduced and when trading began, internal rivalries lead to a bloody war. The Romans defeated the Greeks in Syracuse, bringing 500 years of Sicily’s role at the centre of Magna Graecia (the wealthy land development) to an end. Another notable influence was the Arabs, from 827 BC they invaded Mazara del Vallo with 10,000 Arabs, Berbers, and Saracens (Spanish Muslims). They first conquered Palermo making it their capital, and subsequently became one of the most populous and cosmopolitan centres of the world. They would then go onto to conquer Syracuse.

Many other unique civilizations would come and go through Sicily, each passing through and leaving their own individual mark. The unification of Italy in 1861 led to the Italian Republic in 1946, and Sicily became an autonomous region of Italy. This is just scratching the surface of the history of Sicily. Be mindful of the weather – The weather in July in Sicily, whilst manageable, can also be unpredictable (as we know very well in the UK!) The hottest parts of the day are usually 1pm to 4pm, so plan your sightseeing and itinerary accordingly.

I was fortunate enough to visit this wonderful resort in March. Donna Carmela Resort & Lodges is a beautiful and very well-kept hotel in the Mount Etna region of Sicily. The owners are very proud of their hotel and grounds, and this is reflected in the presentation. Its unique location allows you to see both the sea from one side and the volcano on the opposite side of the hotel. We could see the top of Mount Etna covered in snow from the main garden!

Whether you are in one of the suites in the main building or in one of the gorgeous lodges around it, you have easy access to all the hotel facilities and main area with the absolute certainty you are only being surrounded by quietness and immaculate stunning gardens. I would personally recommend one of the lodges to couples, especially for a special occasion, because the tranquil and modern atmosphere you experience is unrivalled.

what is the food like at donna carmela?

The food at Donna Carmela was divine. Every single meal there, whether breakfast, aperitivo or dinner, is perfection. At breakfast, an amazing buffet table welcomes guests with an array of delicious cakes, biscuits, fruit, croissant etc. They are all delicately made by the exceptional Pastry Chef who personally prepares these amazing treats every morning. There is also have an à la carte menu (free of charge) if you would like to order hot dishes such as eggs, pancakes etc.

For the evening aperitivo I recommend taking suggestions and being guided by the amazing and knowledgeable bar staff, who can provide you with the best cocktails. They often use local wines and prosecco – ‘Sicilian bubbles’- to make them extra special. The main restaurant ‘La Cucina di Donna Carmela’ is spacious and elegant and is the ideal treat for a special dinner or lunch. The chefs focus on local products to create traditional Sicilian dishes with a modern touch, with the menu changing depending on the season.

what can you do at donna carmela?

Due to its strategic position, Donna Carmela is an ideal location to explore the local area with a Concierge service to suggest and arrange excursions. The one I personally recommend, and that I was lucky enough to experience is the hike to Mount Etna followed by a great wine tasting session at the Pietradolce winery . A specialised and knowledgable guide picked us up from the Donna Carmela and took us to Piano Provenzana, located at an altitude of 1800m in the northern slope of Mount Etna. The hike took us approximately 2200m up and was easy going. The panorama from the top is stunning, and the guide explained to us the peculiarities of Mount Etna including the most recent eruptions but also the older ones, which we learned have shaped the landscape as we see it today.

From there you can continue the hike to the top of the volcano, but this may become more challenging depending on how far up you wish to go. However, you also have the option to continue your day at the Pietradolce winery for lunch and wine tasting, which is what we decided to do. We visited both the winery and the cellars and understood why the wine they produce in the Mount Etna region is so unique, due to all the minerals of the land surrounding the volcano. We then had a special lunch with local and traditional Sicilian dishes and of course, the glorious wine tasting! It’s not all about food and wine however – there is also a unique attention to art. They have commissioned local artists to make some special installations for them, all representing the Peitradolce philosophy and a celebration of the power of Mount Etna.

Another fantastic excursion is to Taormina , which we visited on our last day. It is only 30 minutes by car from Donna Carmela and we enjoyed the town with its colourful streets. We visited the Greek Theatre in the morning and then treated ourselves to a nice lunch in a restaurant in the town. Another lovely town to visit, local to the hotel just a short drive, is Acireale, a typical small Sicilian town which has all the charm and wonder of the surrounding towns in the area.

Donna Carmela is open 10 months of the year, and March and April along with October and November are a fantastic time to visit if you want a more relaxed and peaceful visit. You can enjoy excursions and town visits with a comfortable not too hot temperature. All the Donna Carmela staff are amazing, smiling and welcoming. They went above and beyond for us all to make sure our trip was exceptional and were always ready to help and make the best suggestions. I am very grateful for being able to spend these days at Donna Carmela, it’s a real gem in one of the most attractive and famous areas on the island.

The imposing profile of Mount Etna dominating the horizon, the winding narrow streets of the commune, and the ancient Roman and Greek ruins make Taormina a must-visit destination.

Just a 2-hour drive from Ortigia leads into the delightful Taormina Mare. We checked into the Atlantis Bay hotel and received a wonderful warm welcome. Being built into a cliff, the hotel was originally a group of fishermen’s cottages before they were joined together to create Atlantis Bay and because of this, the hotel is unique with its layout. Stairs going up and down can be found within each floor and you enter reception of the top floor and go down to the restaurant, the pool and other facilities on the ground floor. I stayed in a beautiful open plan Junior Suite on the 4 ^th floor with a lovely large terrace overlooking the sea. Original features are complimented by modern furnishings to create a sophisticated and relaxing atmosphere. The Atlantis Bay serves a 5* breakfast with a huge variety of options at the buffet with everything beautifully displayed. There is access to the water from steps down by the pool, with beautiful views from across the bay. Several boats came past us in the evening as they anchored down for people to enjoy the crystal-clear waters and go for a relaxing swim. Lunch options were fabulous here with a very good selection of restaurants from fine dining to proper pizza or club sandwiches.

What is there to do in Taormina?

We were then taken up to Taormina in a Tuk Tuk (also known as Auto rickshaw) which is three-wheeled open-air vehicle, and they are one of the most unique transportation methods that are continuing to grow in popularity.

In the afternoon we were given a guided tour of the Greek/Roman theatre and a look around the historic buildings and markets of Taormina. You can ride the cable car up to Taormina, only costing €10 for a return trip. With continuously operating cable cars every 15 minutes, this beautiful and easy public transport makes it easy for day trips or to have dinner in the evening.

What Excursions are available from Taormina?

There are many excursions available such as climbing Mount Etna or trekking the Alcantara Gorges which are perfect for those seeking adventure and history.

Where would you go for lunch/dinner in Taormina Mare?

We visited Mazzaro Sea Palace for dinner where we had a fabulous 3-course dinner in their outdoor restaurant by the beach. Gorgeous original and rustic features made dining outside in the warm evening sun delightful. The service, food and drinks were incredible, and we felt like royalty. The hotel has a stunning terrace in front of the hotel and behind the generous stretch of beach. Also being built into the cliffside, this hotel sits in a secret cove surrounded by rock formations. The gentle curve of the beach leads to the open sea, with sun beds and parasols lining the beach for guests use.

Is Taormina worth a visit?

In the evening we explored more of Taormina, the most renowned town on the island. We learned that filming regularly takes place on the island of both movies and documentaries, with its background being the breathtaking view of Mount Etna from the main piazza. The main town is perched on a hillside overlooking the Ionian Sea. As we explored, we found countless restaurants, bars and shops open all year round. There are many old churches, lively bars, fine dining restaurants and antique shops. It’s not hard to see why Taormina is one of the most famous towns in Sicily. We really felt enchanted by the warmth of the Sicilian welcome and hospitality, and I cannot wait to visit Taormina again!

Two Weeks in Sicily: Where are the Must-See Attractions?

During a recent 14 day trip to Sicily, I was able to discover what the island has to offer for those who would prefer to immerse themselves in the island’s historic , architectural and natural wonders as opposed to simply relaxing on its beaches soaking up the sun. Indeed, amongst the not-to-be-missed features of the island, is the dominating figure of Mount Etna which overlooks a large portion of the island – and whose frequent eruptions occasionally dust the surrounding villages and towns in its black, volcanic dust. The mountain, at a height of 3,357 metres (over 11,000ft), is relatively easily accessible and, in addition to the wonderful spectacle of its snow-flanked craters, also offers spectacular views for miles around. Whilst Etna itself isn’t seen when flying into Palermo, it’s smaller sisters on the Aeolian islands of Volcano and Stromboli may be visible.

What is the best time of year to spend two weeks in Sicily?

DAYS 1 – 3 : PALERMO & CEFALU

Is Palermo worth visiting? How long should we stay in Palermo?

Similarly to many large cities in Europe, the amount and geographical spread of attractions can make getting the most out of any visit to Palermo seem a daunting prospect. However, by targeting the major points of interest, it is possible to appreciate the amazing architecture and fascinating history of the city.

In addition to the spectacular Cathedral in Palermo , there are officially 84 churches in the city, many of which date from the Arab-Norman era and, this architecturally give more than a nod to buildings of the Islamic culture. There are also many fine examples of Gothic and Baroque styles which were built more recently but which also boast impressive detail and many have opulent interiors. One of the best examples is the Cappella Palatina, situated on the impressive Palazzo del Normanni and which has arguably the finest interior of all the churches in the city

Piazza Vigliena, also known as the ‘Quattro Canti’ is a Baroque square and the center of the historic quarters of the city. It is located at the junction of two of the main streets in the city, Corso Vittorio Emanuele (euphemistically known as ‘Cassaro’) and Via Maqueda, and this intersection is where the borders of the four ancient cantons of Palermo converge. It is marked by 4 architecturally identical buildings with curved frontages facing inward towards each other, and with each having its own integrated fountain, each representing one of the four seasons.

Not far from the Quattro Canti is the Piazza Pretoria with its magnificent fountain and a short walk north along Via Macheda leads to Piazza Giuseppe Verdi and the magnificent Teatro Massimo.

Palermo is also renowned for its street markets, in particular, del Capo, la Vucciria and, possibly the most famous, Ballarò where all realms of products are available including clothing, jewellery, fruit & vegetables, meat and fish. Associated with the markets – and indeed found elsewhere in the city – are the street food stalls serving Sicilian specialities such as arancini, stigghiola, crocè and, for something sweet, cannoli.

Is Cefalù a good day trip from Palermo?

About 60 minutes’ drive to the east of Palermo is the alluring seaside town of Cefalù, dominated by a huge cliff – a further of the turbulent geomorphic history of the island – and having ancient, cobbled streets to explore whilst being situated to a wonderful sandy beach.

The town’s history dates back to the medieval era when Arabs established the own in mid 850s AD after which, in 1063 as part of the Norman invasion, the town was taken by Count Roger and his men and was rebuilt, many elements of which still exist today.

What are the best things to do in Cefalù?

The ideal way to explore the town is to wander through its narrow streets with many interesting shops, cafés & restaurants along the main thoroughfare, Corso Ruggeo, which leads to the impressive cathedral on Piazza Duomo. Running parallel is Via Vittorio Emanuele where there is a wide choice of restaurants overlooking the sea and the ancient wash-house, the Lavatoio, where the townsfolk used to wash their clothes using the water from a spring that issued close to the sea. Continuing further along, leaving the town centre’s eastern boundary, is the small fishing port where daily catches are landed, and fresh fish can be bought direct from the fishermen.

An excellent way to see the town from above is to take the ½ hour walk to the top of ‘La Rocca’, the 270m high cliff that overlooks the town, which affords amazing views all around and out to sea – including sight of the volcanos of the nearby aeolian islands. Alternatively, a more gentle

stroll along the long, sandy beach stopping off at one of the many beach-side bars in the early evening can offer wonderful views of the sunset.

DAYS 4 – 5 : MARSALA

What is Marsala famous for?

Situated around 1½ hour’s drive from Palermo, Marsala is Sicily’s westernmost town and perhaps best known for its sweet, dessert wines, the pure, pink sea saltpans and also as Giuseppe Garibaldi’s landing point on the island during the Expedition of the Thousand – part of the reunification of Italy.

Top Things to do in Marsala:

The town itself has much to offer, in particular its impressive architecture, some examples of which include the Baroque Monastery of San Pietro which also houses the civic museum with artefacts relating to Garibaldi’s presence on the island.

Also worth seeing are the Piazza della Repubblica, overlooked by the cathedral and having restaurants and shops around its perimeter, and the Palazzo VII Aprile with its arcaded frontage. Also, the Convento del Carmine – now a museum of contemporary painting – and the Baglio Anselmi archeological museum are popular with visitors.

When leaving the city, it’s almost obligatory to take a bottle of the local marsala wine – made famous by John Woodhouse who, when sending sample barrels back to the UK, added ‘aqua vita’ spirit (water of life) to prevent it from spoiling and which, in turn, gave it its distinctive flavour and slightly enhanced alcohol content!

DAYS 6-7 : AGRIGENTO

What is Agrigento Sicily known for?

Approximately 2 hours’ drive south-west of Marsala is the town of Agrigento and just outside is the historic UNESCO site of Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples), an impressively well-preserved array of Greek temples arranged on a hilltop site extending to around 1,300 hectares. Its 7 Doric temples are in varying states of preservation, although all are easily identifiable, and, along with the other remains and artefacts, the impressive information provided on a visit enables visitors to fully appreciate their history and culture.

How much time do you need in at The Valley of the Temples?

Whilst it is possible to do a self-guided walking tour of around 1mile in around 90 minutes, to fully appreciate the scale and impressive achievements in the building of these temples, it is recommended to take at least half a day. Indeed, in addition to the temples and other ruins, the Kolymbetra gardens are also worth a visit. This ancient reservoir provided the drinking water for the ancient town of Akragas and has been preserved as a five-hectare garden with planted areas growing fruit and vegetables, ancient aqueducts, with a wide range of Mediterranean plants including almond and citrus trees. Is it worth visiting Agrigento?

Agrigento town itself has its historic ancient quarter, Girgenti, which is a maze of winding, narrow streets leading to the Norman cathedral. In addition, the town has an impressive open square, Piazza Purgatorio on which is located the baroque church of San Lorenzo, with the Lucchesiana Library, church of Santa Marie dei Greci also being nearby.

Is the area around Agrigento worth visiting?

Around 15km to the west of Agrigento, the fascinating Scala dei Turchi (the Turkish Steps), are naturally formed ridges sculpted from the white marl cliffs by thousands of years of erosion by the sea and wind, and which resemble a staircase and which legend has it were used by Turkish pirates seeking to pillage the villages in and around the nearby Realmonte area. Another local legend includes the two Gucciarda rock in the sea just off the Scala dei Turchi, known affectionately as Zita eu Zitu, and which are said to be the petrified incarnations of the young lovers Rosalia and Giuseppe who took their own lives as their parents refused to let them marry.

Days 8 – 10 THE BAROQUE TOWNS

Which Sicilian towns are famous for Baroque architecture?

One of the most enchanting areas of the island is to be found in the south-eastern sector of the island that encompasses the baroque towns of Ragusa, Modica and Scicli , Ispica and Noto which, technically, as each has at least one cathedral, are actually cities.

Ragusa was divided into two parts – quite literally – by a devastating earthquake in 1693 which, as well as razing much of the southern part of the island to the ground, also created a huge ravine separating what was left of what is now Ragusa Alta (upper) and Ragusa Ibla (lower). The winding narrow streets of the two rebuilt elements of the city are now connected by ‘, impressive bridges traversing the ravine – ‘Valle dei Ponti’ - and each has its own fascinating features including the cathedral of San Giorgio in Ragusa Ibla.

Modica: Whilst possibly being better known for its wonderful chocolate, nearby Modica is also a treasure-trove of examples of Baroque architecture created when the city was also rebuilt after the earthquake. Known as ‘The City of a Hundred Churches’, and having UNESCO World Heritage status, Modica set in the hills and built on four rock promontories. The focal point of the city is the cathedral Santo Gorgio which is over 60 metres tall and is accessed by 250 steps and the shadow of the cathedral’s main steeple cast on the palazzo below forms a huge sundial. In the most ancient part of the city, the Vignazza-Fontana quarter, its bronze-age history is evidenced by the thirty tombs of the Necropolis of Quartiriccio. Overlooking the city is the impressive Castello del Conti close to which is the clock tower which is also a symbol of the city.

Scicli: South of Modica, close to the sea, is the city of Scicli. (the focal point for much of the ‘Montalbano’ series) Set at the confluence of three valleys, the city was, as with its neighbours, rebuilt from the rubble after the 1693 earthquake and the wealth of those who contributed to that renaissance is edified in the many ‘palazzo’s and the opulence of its churches and cathedrals. Indeed, amongst those, the city boasts the claim of having not only the most beautiful Baroque Palazzo in Sicily – the Palazzo Beneventano – but also the most beautiful street on the island – Via Franceso Mormino Penna – along which many of the other palazzos are situated. Whilst one of the smallest of the ‘Baroque towns’ Scicli is a focus for the exponents of European contemporary art, giving its name to ‘the Scicli Group’ – a collect of the better-known Italian exponents – some of whose works are on display in the city’s Palazzo Spadaro.

Ispica: Approximately 30km east of Ragusa is the town of Ispica which again, was rebuilt after the 1639 earthquake but in a much more regimented grid fashion than some of its neighbours. Nevertheless, its appearance is rich with Baroque architecture but with an ‘Art Nouveau’ twist - particularly the Palazzo Bruno del Belmonte which is considered one of the most important examples of its type. Outside the town, in a valley leading north, is the Kamarina archeological park and the Cava di Ispica – a range of caves hollowed out of the rock which housed an ancient civilization, which is estimated to date from the 6 ^th century BC.

Noto: Several kilometres further east, lies the city of Noto, arguably the epitome of the Baroque renaissance of the earthquake-ravaged Sicily in the 18 ^th century. The centrepiece of the city’s cathedral which is accessed along Via Vittorio Emanuele after entering the city through its Arco di Triofono (Arch of Triumph) and on which is also the Piazza Immacolata, the Church of San Francesco all’Immacolata, attached to which is the Franciscan convent. In addition, there is the church of Santa Chiara and the Palazzo Ducezio, which is the Moti’s town hall.

Days 11-12 : SYRACUSE & ORTIGIA

What is the most beautiful region of Sicily?

A city rich in Greek and Roman architecture, Cicero once considered Syracuse to be the most beautiful of all the Greek cities. Perhaps most famously, the city of Syracuse is home to one of the greatest ancient Greek theatres dating back to the 5th century BC and large enough to hold an audience of up to 15,000. This theatre draws history enthusiasts from all over the world and is still used to this day in the annual Greek theatre festival (May/June). With other attractions such as the 3rd century Roman amphitheatre, archaeological museum as well as shops, restaurants and bars in the predominantly medieval and Baroque island of Ortigia, Syracuse is well worth visiting along with the rocky Necropolis of Pantalica which together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

One of the most architecturally stunning regions of Sicily is Ortigia , a small island that forms the historic heart of Syracuse. The island, also known as the Città Vecchia, is connected to the modern city via a bridge which stretches across a narrow strip of sea. Days 13 - 14: TAORMINA & MOUNT ETNA

What is special about Taormina?

Overlooked by the eastern flank of the volcano is the ancient, elevated city of Taormina, perched part way up a sea cliff from which there are amazing views of Etna and out over the Ionian Sea and Naxos Bay and beach below. The city is protected by the restored remains of its Roman walls punctuated by the arches of the Porta Messina and Porta Catania at each end of the main thoroughfare, Corso Umberto. Situated on a rock promontory on the eastern edge of the town is the superbly preserved Greco-Roman theatre, the Teatro Antico (which is still used for concerts on a regular basis) and below are the immaculately maintained Duke of Cesaro gardens cascading down towards the sea at Mazzaro.

Approximately halfway along Corso Umberto is the monochrome marble paved Piazza IX Aprile on which is situated the Sant’ Agostino church built in 1448 and the Torre dell’Orologio clock tower – which has been restored a number of times but originally dates from the 12 ^th century.

A short walk from the Porta Messina, situated on Via Pirandello are the Byzantine tombs known as the Arabian Necropolis which originally date from the 12 ^th & 13 ^th centuries. Despite their archeological importance, the tombs can easily be mistaken for a vaulted wall running along the side of the road but which nevertheless represent an important indication of the Christian way of life in Taormina at the time.

Another example of the ancient history of the town is the San Dominico monastery which dates from 1374 but which has now become a renowned luxury hotel, which featured heavily in the 2 ^nd series of ‘White Lotus’: See our Blog ‘Tour Sicily’s White Lotus Locations’ >

Other places of interest in the town include the cathedral and the fountain in the Piazza Duomo, Palazzo Corvaja the Badia Vecchia and the Antiquarium, as mall museum dedicated to the history of the town – and which includes a marble plaque proclaiming that a ‘Taoromenitano’ (a resident of Taormina) won a horse race at the Olympic games!

Car parking in the town is almost exclusively reserved for resident permit holders only and whilst access up to the town is quite steep and sinuous, there is a very regular and reliable bus service that stops at the main points in the town. In addition, there is a cable car that leads town to the Mazzarò bay from where the famous island of Isola Bella is just a short walk away.

Exploring Mount Etna from Taormina

Being the largest major town close to Mount Etna, Taormina is the base for many organized walks and excursions to the volcano. These are many and varied, from a gentile experience including lunch at one of the numerous vineyards on the mountain’s slopes and an air-conditioned drive up to one of the craters and even helicopter trips up to and around the main crater, to the much more energetic guided hikes up through the snow. The availability of such experiences depends very much upon the prevailing weather conditions – and whether the volcano is in one of its frequent eruption phases.

What is the most beautiful region of sicily?

One of the most architecturally stunning regions of Sicily is Ortigia, a small island that forms the historic heart of Syracuse. The island, also known as the Città Vecchia, is connected to the modern city via a bridge which stretches across a narrow strip of sea. Renowned for its Greek heritage, Ortigia is a UNESCO landmark for its "remarkable testimony of the Mediterranean cultures over the centuries” with many historical landmarks, Baroque beauty and coastal charm.

Review of Ortigia by Elaine from Just Sicily:

I was fortunate enough to be invited on an educational tour of Ortigia in October 2024. Our first day began when we landed in Catania airport at lunchtime. After an hour drive from the airport, we found ourselves in the heart of the historic island. Our first stop was the delightful Palazzo Artemide. This centrally located hotel is traditional with Sicilian character and style, with the same limestone used for the Greek temples and Baroque palaces inherited from Arab architecture. Located next to the Cathedral and main square in Ortigia, Piazza Duomo, Via Roma is one of the streets that runs the length of the island, making it simple to find your way back to the hotel after sightseeing and exploring the local area.

Is Ortigia a walkable town?

There are plenty of lovely narrow windy streets with local shops selling handcrafted Sicilian souvenirs, as well as a plethora of restaurants and cafés ready to welcome you with their traditional delicacies. The friendly locals and tourists gives a lively buzz to the town, creating a convivial atmosphere. The island is ideal for those who enjoy exploring on foot, however many hotels have car valet service for guests who have a hire car and guests of Palazzo Artemide can arrange someone to meet them just before the bridge over to Ortigia Island to alleviate navigating the unfamiliar narrow busy streets! Lungomare Alfeo is a street overlooking the sea lined with café bars and restaurants and is a great place to watch the sunset in the east with an aperitif.

Where is the best place to stay?

Located in the heart of Ortigia Island close to Syracuse on the south east coast of Sicily, Palazzo Artemide is now a historic hotel housed in a 19th century building and a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque architecture adjacent to the Cathedral and overlooking Piazza Minerva, ideal for sightseeing and experiencing Sicilian culture. The building was originally two separate smaller buildings, one built in the early 1900s and one in the 1990s that have been blended seamlessly to create one large building that is now the hotel today. We stayed in a Deluxe room which was generous in size and had the benefit of a large en suite shower room. The modern furnishings made the room feel sleek and bright. This contemporary style flowed through the hotel after recently being refurbished in 2024 with high ceilings and friendly and welcoming staff. Palazzo Artemide serves breakfast (included for hotel guests), lunch and dinner with impeccable service and each delicacy crafted freshly on site made each dish delicious. The restaurant is outside the hotel and located near the Piazza with plenty of shade. Being open to the public gives the restaurant a lively atmosphere during all times of the day (booking for lunch and dinner is recommended).

What is there to do in Ortigia?

I would highly recommend a guided tour around Ortigia. We were lucky enough to have a guide called Patti who brought the town alive with knowledge about the ancient Greek origins of the city and details of the many nations who came to conquer, making the history and architecture unique and interesting. She guided us to the Fountain of Arethusa and told us the Greek myth which gave the fountain its name. Interestingly the Fountain is the only place in the world where you will find papyrus growing outside of Egypt. There are plenty of shops with souvenirs of pictures printed onto papyrus paper. After more sightseeing including a visit to the Cathedral, we wandered through the market which sells all sorts of souvenirs, textiles, bags and a dedicated food area selling fresh food and spices. Fratelli Burgio is a rustic and popular restaurant found in the food section of the market. The quality of the food was excellent with an incredible antipasti board and a small cannolo for desert made dining here amongst the hustle and bustle of the town an unforgettable experience.

In the afternoon we went for a boat trip which Palazzo Artemide can book for you. The skipper started our adventure across the bay passing the stunning Minareto hotel and took us around the island. His passion for the island could not be understated as he described each landmark in detail. The water was calm and clear making it a splendid afternoon for a boat trip, along with complimentary prosecco. We were taken inside some of the small caves along the coast including a stalactite cave, which had extremely clear and gentle water. Before cruising under the low bridge, we could see Ortea Palace hotel on the sea front near the marina. After disembarking we headed for a lovely relaxing dinner at the hotel surrounded by welcoming staff and friendly locals. For history buffs or those who enjoy a relaxing and welcoming town, Ortigia Island is brimming with exciting possibilities for all who wish to explore this historic and beautiful island.

‘The White Lotus’ is a recent American comedy drama anthology television series that has everybody talking. With its intense character drama and amazing sets, it’s easy to see why this show is popular. Season one is set in Hawaii, the currently airing season three is set in Thailand, and our personal favourite: season two set in Sicily. The show represents the wonderful country in a new and enchanting light - but where are the stunning filming locations?

Palermo

Is Palermo worth visiting?

Alluring capital city of the island and the biggest historical centre in Europe, Palermo is an absolute must-see destination in the north west of Sicily. Culture and amazing food are the main attraction, as well as museums, Churches, Royal Palace and Opera Theatre. Local markets, appealing restaurants and delicious street food gives a lively buzz and atmosphere that Palermo is widely known for. Many people are attracted to the city for its Mediterranean climate, famous gastronomy and restaurants, the churches and ancient buildings and even the nightlife and music. There is something unique for everyone who visits this outstanding city.

Cefalù offers a rare combination of attractions: one of Sicily’s finest beaches next to one its greatest Arab-Norman architectural masterpieces, ensuring there is something for everyone in this small but interesting town.

Taormina

Taormina is a truly enchanting part of Sicily featured in The White Lotus Season 2. As well as yacht trip on the Ionian sea, the characters take a day trip to the city where they discover that the town is rich in atmosphere, history and culture. Exterior scenes were filmed at the San Domenico Palace where visitors can book for drinks and dinner at the hotel. Some scenes were set on the beach by Isola Bella in Taormina Mare and also featured the majestic Greek amphitheatre with Mount Etna beyond.

What is Special about Noto Sicily?

Located in the Province of Syracuse, this Baroque style town is rich in history and architecture. In 2002, the town and its church were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, Noto invites explorers to wander through the winding streets, discover the Cathedrals and Churches, and enjoy the many Piazzas covered in cafes, bars and restaurants. Along Corso Vittorio Emanuele are many of Noto’s most notable buildings, including Palazzo Ducrezio and the Jesuit Church and College. If visiting in May, find the yearly Infiorata Festival , celebrating all things spring and summer with a colourful fiesta.

With the Mediterranean warm sun still shining in Palermo in early October, Huw from Just Sicily enjoyed an unexpected 4-day visit to this charming Sicilian city.

With the Mediterranean warm sun still shining in Palermo in early October, Huw from Just Sicily enjoyed an unexpected 4-day visit to this charming Sicilian city. The primary mission was to train our reservation staff on a new system, but Palermo is a delightful place to combine work and leisure.

Savouring October in Sicily:

Palermo in October is a hidden treasure for visitors, ideal for a long weekend or a few days sightseeing before combining with a relaxing hotel holiday. The average temperature is in the late 20s during the day with sunny skies but the nights are cooler, making it an ideal time to explore without the summer heat. Additionally, there's a noticeable decrease in the tourist crowds, although the city is still alive with Sicilian life, history, culture and gastronomy. Low season also offers visitors more affordable flights and accommodations!

A Taste of Notarbatolo:

The city centre of Palermo offers a wide range of historical points of interest such as the cathedral, Palace of the Normans, Massimo theatre, Politeama theatre and Pretoria Square. However on this occasion, Huw stayed in the vibrant Notarbatolo neighbourhood, conveniently located near the Just Sicily office. During the evenings, Notarbatolo bursts into life, mirroring the vivacity of the centre of Palermo. Locals, after a day's work, fill the streets and head to the charming café bars offering the beloved traditional Italian 'aperitivo' to stimulate the appetite!

A Night to Remember:

One evening, Huw found himself perched at a corner bar ‘Treska’ https://maps.app.goo.gl/JCEG5J8R3GECdBmi6?g_st=iw that is legendary among the locals for its tantalizing antipasti. The enticing selection included deep-fried chickpeas, mouthwatering slices of pizza with fresh aubergine, homemade potato croquettes oozing with cheese, and a myriad of other delights that paired beautifully with an Aperol Spritz or a crisp local white wine.

Dining Delights Await:

The local recommendation was none other than the renowned Archestrato di Gela, a hidden gem in this corner of Palermo. The website, http://www.archestratodigela.it/ , had me intrigued even before I arrived. Surprisingly, there were plenty of tables, however before long

it quickly became apparent that the popularity of this establishment was no secret. By 8pm every table was filled and it was clear that Archestrato was a place much loved by locals and visitors alike. Huw was captivated by the creativity of their designer pizzas, where each pizza felt like a work of art and was treated to an amazing Sicilian gastronomic experience and one of the best pizza’s in all of Sicily, a true reflection of the culinary traditions and innovations that define this region.

Huw’s experience of Notarbatolo, is just one area of Palermo, yet this city has a lot more to offer, both gastronomically and culturally.
