Catania is the second largest city in Sicily and is situated at the foot of Mount Etna in front of the Ionian Sea. Being so close to the volcano, Catania has experienced its fair share of turmoil over the years and has been rebuilt a number of times as a result, using the same volcanic rock to create a beautiful collection of Baroque-style buildings.

It provides a gateway into the island and with an international airport, university and buzzing city centre, Catania is one of the most popular commercial cities in Sicily with a host of restaurants, bars, shops and monuments.

Catania is also one of the most beautiful and historical Sicilian cities and for this reason UNESCO has declared the city centre a World Heritage Site. Situated in the historic centre of Catania, there are many attractions and monuments close to Palazzo Marletta which overlooks the Duomo Square with the Elephant Fountain being the symbol of Catania and close by is the Cathedral of Sant’Agata.

Also close by is the Ancient Greek Roman Theatre. Visit Via Crociferi to view the Baroque architecture and also visit a number of churches including the magnificent church of San Benedetto, the church of San Francesco Borgia dei Gesuiti, the church of San Giuliano and San Camillo. Also, there is the Benedictine monastery and Ursino Castle to visit. There is an interesting Civic Museum of Catania, the magnificent Opera house, Teatro Massimo Bellini and Villa Bellini is one of the two oldest ornamental gardens.

Università Square is located along Via Etnea, less than a hundred meters from Piazza Duomo, and is one of the most scenic squares in the historic centre of Catania. The fish market in Catania is well worth a visit.
